What Is Singapore Math?

At iSchool Pte Ltd, we believe mathematics should be understood deeply — not memorised mechanically. That is why our teaching philosophy is strongly influenced by the Singapore Math approach, a world-renowned method that focuses on conceptual understanding, problem-solving, and mastery learning.

Singapore Math first gained international attention after Singapore students consistently ranked among the top performers in global mathematics studies such as TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study). Over the years, schools around the world — including those in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia — have adopted many of the strategies and teaching principles developed in Singapore.

What Makes Singapore Math Different?

Unlike traditional approaches that often focus heavily on memorising formulas and procedures, Singapore Math helps students understand why mathematical methods work.

The approach focuses on:

  • Deep conceptual understanding
  • Strong number sense and fluency
  • Logical reasoning and mathematical thinking
  • Structured mastery learning
  • Problem-solving using heuristics
  • Applying mathematics confidently to unfamiliar situations

Instead of simply teaching students to follow steps, Singapore Math encourages students to think critically, explain their reasoning, and develop flexible problem-solving skills.

The CPA Approach: Concrete → Pictorial → Abstract

One of the key foundations of Singapore Math is the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach, inspired by the work of Jerome Bruner.

Students learn mathematics progressively through three stages:

1. Concrete

Students first use physical objects such as counters, blocks, or manipulatives to explore mathematical concepts.

2. Pictorial

Students then represent ideas visually using diagrams, models, and drawings.

3. Abstract

Finally, students move on to mathematical symbols, equations, and abstract reasoning.

This progression helps students build strong understanding instead of relying on memorisation alone.

Problem-Solving Through Heuristics

Singapore Math is also well known for teaching heuristics — structured problem-solving strategies that help students tackle challenging and unfamiliar questions.

One of the most recognised heuristics is bar modelling, a visual method widely used in Singapore schools. Bar models help students organise information clearly and understand relationships within word problems before solving them mathematically.

At iSchool Pte Ltd, we strongly believe these visual and logical approaches help students become more confident and independent problem-solvers.

Built on Research and Educational Theory

Singapore Math is not based on guesswork or rote drills. The approach incorporates educational research and learning theories from internationally respected experts, including:

  • Jerome Bruner — CPA learning and scaffolding
  • Richard Skemp — relational understanding versus instrumental learning
  • Jean Piaget — cognitive development in children
  • Lev Vygotsky — guided learning and scaffolding
  • Zoltán Dienes — learning through variation and multiple representations

These theories support a mastery-based approach where students revisit concepts over time with increasing depth and sophistication.

Why Has Singapore Math Become So Popular Worldwide?

Singapore students have consistently performed among the best internationally in mathematics assessments conducted by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement.

Many educators attribute this success to:

  • Strong conceptual foundations
  • Carefully sequenced learning progression
  • Consistent mastery of topics
  • Emphasis on reasoning and problem-solving
  • Effective visual strategies such as bar modelling

Because of these strengths, Singapore-inspired mathematics programmes are now used in thousands of schools worldwide.

Our Belief at iSchool Pte Ltd

At iSchool Pte Ltd, we believe every child can improve in mathematics with the right guidance, structured practice, and deep conceptual understanding.

Our platform incorporates many principles inspired by Singapore Math, including:

  • Step-by-step mastery learning
  • Visual problem-solving methods
  • Concept-focused practice
  • Structured progression
  • Repeated exposure through question variations
  • Building confidence through understanding

Our goal is not only to help students perform well in examinations, but also to help them become confident mathematical thinkers for the future.
